The ARIAN BAND
The Arian Band was a pioneering force in Iranian pop music, particularly in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic Revolution when pop music was banned, and women were forbidden from singing solo in public. Formed by Ali Pahlavan and Payam Salehi, Arian was the first mixed-gender pop band to gain official approval in Iran. This was a significant milestone, as their lineup included female backup vocalists and a guitar player—a bold move at a time when women’s voices and public music activities were heavily restricted.
Arian’s journey was marked by resilience and determination. Despite facing censorship, threats, and frequent bans from performing, the band managed to release several successful albums, including their debut in 2000, which became the best-selling record of the year in Iran. They broke new ground by blending Persian melodies with Western pop elements, offering a fresh sound that resonated with millions.
The band also achieved international recognition, including being the first Iranian pop band nominated for a BBC World Music Award and performing in countries like Canada, Sweden, and the United States. Despite the political pressures and restrictions that eventually led to their disbandment, Arian’s legacy remains as a trailblazer for Iranian pop music, paving the way for future artists and ensuring that women could have a place on the stage.
The Arian band has released 6 albums as follows:
Gole Aftabgardoon
